 Advancement for Allah (swt’s) Sake Episode 5: Al-Khwarizmi - The Muslim Behind Algebra and Algorithms

Today, we are exploring the Muslim mathematician whose work lives inside nearly every computer, search engine, navigation system and piece of modern software: Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi.

Al-Khwarizmi lived during the ninth century and worked in Baghdad’s celebrated intellectual environment, associated with the House of Wisdom. Scholars there studied, translated, preserved and expanded knowledge inherited from civilizations including the Greeks, Persians and Indians.

Al-Khwarizmi did not merely transmit that knowledge. He organized mathematical ideas into systematic methods that other people could learn and apply. His most famous work was The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing. The Arabic word al-jabr, meaning completion or restoration, appeared in its title and eventually gave the English language the word algebra.

His work presented organized methods for solving linear and quadratic equations. Rather than offering only isolated puzzles, he treated algebra as a distinct and teachable area of mathematics.

His name also entered the language of modern technology. In medieval Latin translations, al-Khwarizmi’s name appeared in forms such as “Algoritmi,” from that Latinized name came the word algorithm: a defined, step-by-step method used to solve a problem.

Every time a computer processes instructions, a navigation application calculates a route or a search engine organizes information, algorithms are operating. It is important, however, to understand that al-Khwarizmi did not invent every idea used in his works from nothing. Indian mathematicians had developed the place-value numeral system and the use of zero. Greek, Babylonian and other mathematical traditions had addressed equations centuries earlier. Al-Khwarizmi studied within this broader inheritance and then systematized, expanded and communicated mathematical methods in a new and highly influential way.

Acknowledging earlier civilizations does not diminish him. Muslim scholarship at its strongest was never threatened by truth. It took beneficial knowledge wherever it was found, examined it, developed it and placed it into the service of society.

The individual frequently called the “father of algebra” in some Western accounts is the earlier Greek mathematician Diophantus. Diophantus unquestionably made important contributions to number theory and mathematical notation.

Historians of mathematics have disputed whether that title accurately describes his work. MacTutor notes that Diophantus’s surviving problems were remarkable but unsystematic, while al-Khwarizmi taught algebra in an elementary form and as a subject in its own right. A National Academies history similarly notes the scholarly argument that algebra as a discipline begins more appropriately with al-Khwarizmi.

What makes al-Khwarizmi’s work especially meaningful is its practical purpose. In the introduction to his algebraic work, he explained that these methods could help people with inheritance, legacies, property division, lawsuits, trade, land measurement and the digging of canals.

This was not mathematics isolated from human life. It was mathematics used to solve real problems facing society. Consider the connection to Islam. The Qur’an established specific shares of inheritance. Correctly distributing an estate can require mathematical reasoning. Trade requires accurate calculation. Land and construction require measurement. Public infrastructure requires engineering.

Therefore, mathematics could serve justice, prevent disputes and ensure that people received what was rightfully theirs. For the Muslim, solving an equation can become an act of worship when the intention and application are pleasing to Allah (swt).

Allah (swt) instructed the Prophet (saw) to say:

[وَقُل رَّبِّ زِدۡنِي عِلۡمٗا]

“My Lord, increase me in knowledge.” [Surah Ta Ha, verse 114.]

Notice that the believer is taught to ask for an increase in knowledge—not simply an increase in wealth, influence or reputation. Knowledge also brings responsibility.

Today, algorithms can be used to diagnose illness, improve transportation and make education accessible. They can also be used to conduct surveillance, manipulate public opinion, discriminate between populations, addict users and guide weapons toward targets.

The algorithm does not possess an Aqeedah. The person designing, funding and deploying it does. In a capitalist system, technology is frequently directed toward whatever captures the most attention, collects the most data or produces the greatest return. Human behavior becomes a product. Privacy becomes a resource to be extracted. Engineers are told to optimize engagement without asking whether the engagement damages the individual or society. Islam does not prohibit invention, ownership or lawful profit. However, Muslim cannot surrender moral judgment to the market.

The Muslim engineer does not ask only, “Does the system work?” He must also ask, “Is it just? Is it halal? Does it deceive people? Does it violate their dignity? Will I be pleased to place this work before Allah on the Day of Judgment?”

Al-Khwarizmi’s legacy reminds us that our Ummah did not once lead because Muslims merely memorized the accomplishments of earlier generations. They led because they learned, organized, calculated, experimented and solved the actual problems facing society.

The Messenger of Allah (saw) taught that among the deeds whose reward continues after death is knowledge from which people benefit; more than a thousand years after al-Khwarizmi, humanity still speaks a word derived from his book and another derived from his name.

But the objective is not simply to celebrate that an algorithm has a Muslim name. The objective is to produce a new generation of Muslims whose knowledge once again benefits humanity and whose work is directed by revelation.

We do not advance merely to own the next patent, build the largest company or become servants of another civilization’s priorities.

We advance because Allah (swt) commanded us to think, learn and act. We advance to solve the problems of the Ummah. We advance to benefit humanity. Above all, we advance for Allah (swt’s) sake.
