Cutting Elderly Care while Spending Billions on the Olympics

  • Published in Politics
  •   |

As 2013 comes to a close, many are warning about the effect of a range of UK government cuts to the funding of public services and how that will affect some of the elderly, services delivered by local councils and may even lead to the closure of hospital wards. Why? Because money is scarce and the government has to reduce the budget deficit so "everyone has to tighten their belt" and share the pain.

Go back a few months and remember the spending on the London Olympics. It was a grand public celebration - something Britain does well. A recent opinion poll showed an overwhelming public view that the Olympic Games were enjoyable, cheerful and worth the money. It created a feel-good factor in many of the public as they saw the UK projected in the most positive light as an advanced, tolerant, multi-cultural society. The public saw many British gold medallists of Somali, Afro-Caribbean and other origins. Due to the current austerity, there are now reports of families struggling to afford food and children going hungry. In the feel-good fog, the extravagant nature of the games seems to have been forgotten.

The original promise was that the Olympics would cost between £2 billion and £3billion. It eventually cost just under £9bn. While the government was preaching austerity due to the dire financial situation in the country, earlier in the year the government was able to allocate even more money for the Olympics opening ceremony. It was as if the Treasury had signed an open cheque for the Olympics hence costs rose and rose until it reached nearly £9 billion. Most of the money went to well-heeled consultants, designers, contractors and sports administrators.

Before the Olympics, London Mayor Boris Johnson talked of a "fantastic boost" to London tourism and David Cameron talked of an "extra £13bn profit to British business abroad." Such claims have proved to be wishful thinking as many tourists stayed away from London during the busy Olympics period.

Temporary stadiums were built in Stratford, East London - despite questions about how much they will be used after the Olympics. At the time, challenging this strongly seemed like blasphemy. It was also unfashionable to mention the fact that British medal "heroes" of the games, nearly all needed millions in public money, spent on high-cost equipment and training - in order to win their medals. Questioning the money spent was tantamount to spoiling the fun. After all, the London Olympics were a success and lets now look forward to Rio De Janiero 2016, and "let us allocate more money so we can win more medals" than London 2012.

Obviously, £9 billion might have been spent on worthier causes including hospitals, more care for the elderly or many much needed infrastructure projects at a time when those out of work are facing higher energy bills and we are seeing a rise in the number of people depending on food banks for free food - which they cannot afford.

The spending on the Olympics indicates the ease with which a democratic government could generate general hysteria to validate reckless spending on an event (that generated a feel good factor) while cutting back on essential hospital and school services. An atmosphere was created whereby those who dared question such priority by a government that had spent the entire year telling everyone to tighten belts - met vitriol.

What are the values that allow such misplaced priorities? What are the values that allow the abandoning of the elderly in old people's homes while their children wash their hands of them in order to ‘enjoy' their own lives? What are the values that prioritise the fun and feel good of a few weeks of Olympics over providing basic services to the wider public?

Some voices in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya are advocating that we emulate the West. They fail to account for how secular Western capitalist societies promote individualism and short-term enjoyment which then allows that to be prioritised over providing services for the poor and the wider society.

The Prophet (saw) said:

"لَيْسَ الْمُؤْمِنُ الَّذِي يَشْبَعُ وَجَارُهُ جَائِعٌ"

"He is not a believer whose stomach is filled while the neighbor to his side goes hungry." [Al-Bayhaqi]

So in the Islamic Khilafah "Caliphate" state, Muslims understand that Islam mandates that it is forbidden for some in society to live in splendour and extravagance whilst others go hungry or are in need of basic services. This ensures that citizens in the Islamic Khilafah "Caliphate" state account the ruler if they neglect this duty or have misplaced priorities and seek to spend on frivolous White Elephants - like palaces, and ski resorts in the desert- as the UK government did with the Olympic games.

UN Envoy, Moscow Call for Revival of Syria Plan:

Russia and the U.N called Thursday for the resuscitation of a peace initiative for Syria that never got off the ground when it was proposed months ago because both parties to the conflict rejected it. The plan, unveiled by world powers at an international conference in Geneva in June, called for an open-ended cease-fire, a transitional government to run the country until elections, and the drafting of a new constitution. The plan was a non-starter for the opposition because it did not explicitly ban authoritarian President Bashar Assad and other members of his regime from taking part in the transitional leadership. The regime ignored it because it would entail voluntarily giving up power. There was no sign that the plan had any more chance of succeeding now than it did back in June. Assad's government did not comment on the attempt to revive the proposal, and a coordinator for the rebels seeking to end Assad's rule called the plan "illogical." "No one in the opposition can accept this, and if they accept it, it will be refused by the Syrian people," said Bassam Al-Dada, a Turkey-based coordinator with the rebel Free Syrian Army. He said Assad's forces have killed too many people for him to play a role in any solution.

Kuwaiti Liberals Blast Calls to Ban Xmas Celebrations:

Several Kuwaiti liberal civil societies have condemned calls from some organisations and individuals forbidding the celebration of Christmas in the state, a report said yesterday. The civil societies said in a statement published by Al-Jarida newspaper that every year at this time certain groups declare celebrating Christmas and New Year as forbidden from an Islamic point of view. "Because such actions represent an insult to Christianity and Christians ... we strongly reject the publication of such calls," a statement signed by nine liberal groups said, adding that such calls were an act of hatred criminalised under the international law. The statement did not say who issued the calls, but usually some radical religious individuals and small groups issue fatwas (religious edicts) forbidding Christmas celebrations. However, the mainstream Islamic organisations do not issue such calls. There are no government restrictions on religious or social celebrations of Christmas or New Year in the conservative emirate, but social parties on any occasion must abide by strict regulations. Kuwait has about a dozen churches which all freely mark Christmas especially in the main church complex in the heart of the capital Kuwait City. There are some 200 Christians - mainly of Iraqi or Palestinian origin - among the 1.2 million native population of Kuwait. But the state is home to 642,000 foreign Christians, or 17 percent of Kuwait's population of 3.8 million, mostly from India, the Philippines, Egypt, Lebanon and the West.

US Drone Strikes Down in Pakistan, Up in Yemen:

US drone strikes against militants decreased in Pakistan's tribal regions for the second year in a row but intensified in Yemen, according to figures compiled by a Washington think tank. In Pakistan, 46 strikes were carried out in 2012, compared to 72 in 2011 and 122 in 2010, the New America Foundation said, based on its compilation of reports in international media. But Yemen saw an equally drastic increase in the clandestine attacks, with strikes against al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) militants rising from 18 in 2011 to 53 in 2012. This "drone war" is officially classified, and the US does not provide any information on the strikes. President Barack Obama, who has increased the use of drones compared to his predecessor, George W. Bush, only incidentally recognized their existence at the end of January in an online exchange. The vast majority of the strikes in Pakistan hit in North Waziristan. Many of the strikes were in and around the regional capital, Miranshah. These strikes, with Reaper or Predator drones, killed between 189 and 308 militants and at least seven civilians, the New America Foundation said. According to the Afghan spy agency, the operational leader of the al Qaeda-linked Haqqani network, Badruddin Haqqani, son of the group's founder, was killed in an August 21 drone strike - though the death has not been confirmed by other sources. Meanwhile, in Yemen, between 397 and 539 militants were killed by drone strikes, according to the New America Foundation, which did not specify the number of civilian victims. Some of the strikes in Yemen were conducted by US airplanes. The drones used there are operated both by the CIA and by the Joint Special Operations Command. The intelligence agency has its own fleet of 30-35 devices, according to the Washington Post, while the Pentagon can count on 215 Predator and Reaper drones, according to the Congressional Research Service.

China to be Surrounded by US Stealth Jets by 2017:

The United States' presence in the Asia-Pacific is about to be much more impressive: by 2017, the US is expected to have all but surrounded China, its number one economic rival, with fleets of the most advanced stealth warplanes in the world. According to recent reports from some of the Pentagon's top-brass, Uncle Sam will be essentially surrounding the United States' top competitor in only five years' time. By 2017, the Air Force's F-22s and B-2s, as well as a fleet of the Marine Corps' F-35, will all be deployed east. News of the long-term plan stems from a report by Wired's David Axe this week, who notes that several recent interviews with Defense Department officials suggest that the Obama administration's "strategic pivot" plan in Asia announced earlier this year hasn't been ignored just yet. In June, the Pentagon revealed plans to restructure the US military so that 60 percent of its warships would be in the Asia-Pacific by 2020. At the time, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the decision was not meant to intimidate China, but was rather a common sense response to make sure America's resources were divvied out where they might be most needed. "Some view the increased emphasis by the United States on Asia-Pacific as a challenge to China, I reject that view entirely," Panetta said this summer. As recently as November, the secretary said of Asia, "We're going to continue to invest in the region," but that "It's going to take a lot of work and a lot of focus." Now only weeks later, the pieces are already being put in place. Speaking of the B-2 bombers last month, 8th Air Force Commander Maj. Gen. Stephen Wilson told Air Force Magazine that fleets "will rotate to forward operating locations all over the world in small numbers for a few weeks at a time," with those operations "beginning with a short Pacific deployment" in early 2013. That news takes on a whole new light following an address from Sec. Panetta at the National Press Club in Washington last week, where he announced "new deployments of F-22s ... to Japan" and confirmed that the Pentagon is "laying the groundwork" for F-35s to be in Japan by 2017.

Press Release Hizb ut Tahrir Calls Upon the People to Reject Hasina-Khaleda and Overthrow the Democratic System which Manufactures Agent Rulers

Hizb ut Tahrir organized public meetings today after Jummah prayers outside several mosques across Dhaka city, exposing Hasina-Khaleda's subservience to US-India and calling upon the people to overthrow the democratic system which creates such agents. Speakers at the meetings said, in order to prevent the re-establishment of the Khilafah "Caliphate" and contain the growth of China, the leader of the crusaders America is using the agent rulers to make Bangladesh subservient to US-Indian sphere of influence. For the past 4 years, the Hasina government collaborated with the Americans and Indians in implementing this evil design through her numerous treacherous actions against the country. The leader of the opposition alliance Khaleda Zia is no different from Hasina in her subservience to the imperialists. She will continue the same treacherous policies if her party and alliance formed the government.

The speakers said Hasina and Khaleda are products of the same democratic system which produces rulers who cause hardship for their people at home and act as agents for their masters in foreign capitals. In it the rulers rule the people with injustice and commit treacheries against the people. The democratic system was never known to the Muslims until the arrival of colonialism. The establishment of democracy in the Muslim countries (and 3rd world countries) was and is always accompanied by installing Western agents in power. It is the most deceptive method of neo-colonialism which makes the exploited people think that their rulers are elected by themselves whereas in fact these rulers are loyal to the imperialists. The case of Bangladesh is the same. The leaders of the Awami League who were agents of Britain became rulers of the country after independence. Thereafter Ziaur Rahman, agent of the US and after him Ershad, backed by Britain-India, ruled over the country. After the fall of Ershad, with American and British-Indian backing behind Khaleda and Hasina respectively, "democratic elections" were held and since then power has been alternating between these two, accompanied by the major parties allied to them.

Finally the speakers called upon the people to reject Hasina and Khaleda, overthrow democracy and re-establish the Khilafah "Caliphate" state, which will take care of the people's affairs sincerely and efficiently, rule them with justice and fulfill their trusts; and it will eject US-Britain-India to eliminate forever their domination over the sovereignty, security, resources and military of the country.
